Lady Hawks Volleyball: Fall 2017 Season

11/2/2017

By Sarah Lange

The Lady Hawks Volleyball Team wrapped up their season in October over fall break, competing against Dyer County High School in the regional tournament. The team dominated this season with an impressive record of 18-3, defeating all other schools in the district with the exception of Clarksville High School. Going into the District Tournament, the Lady Hawks seated second. They hosted Kenwood High School in the first round of the tournament, where they swept the Lady Knights with an overall game score of 3-0. The second night of the District Tournament had equally exciting results; the Lady Hawks pulled out another win against the Northeast Eagles with a final score of 3-1.

The girls then advanced to the district finals and battled against the Clarksville Wildcats. The hard-fought game resulted in a triumphant win for Rossview, with an impressive final score of 3-0. Rossview advanced to the Regional Tournament and hosted Dyer County, where they lost in a devastating final game with a score of 3-2.

Head coach Krystal Weber emphasized proper fundamentals and built on the skills that players developed over the summer and past seasons. This is Coach Weber’s fourth year as head coach and her first year winning the district tournament. Assistant coaches Michelle Favreau and Mary Britten were new to the volleyball program at Rossview this year; they worked closely with the freshmen and the junior varsity teams to develop the younger players. Coach Britton is a new faculty member at Rossview High School this year, and she demonstrated tremendous skill in both her positive attitude towards players and knowledge of the game. Britten says, “I was ecstatic to become a part of the volleyball family and help lead the freshman team to a 8-1 season...It’s awesome to see all three teams come together in practice, learn from each other, lead and support each other, and cheer each other on during games.”

The team was led this year by seniors Meg Wilson, Kathryn Schmittou, and Averi Greene. Meg Wilson, a 6’0” middle blocker, worked hard and made extraordinary progress this season, ending her high school volleyball career with 72 kills and 31 total blocks. Kathryn Schmittou, a defensive specialist who finished the season with 89 total digs and over 140 serve receive passes, led the team with her upbeat attitude and continuous support. Her leadership skills secured her the position of team captain. She, along with fellow varsity captain Chloe Campbell, made crucial decisions on and off the court, drawing the team closer together than ever before. Chloe Campbell, a sophomore outside hitter and setter, inspired her team and drove them to sweeping victories with her unstoppable hustle and irrepressible motivation. She finished her first year on the Rossview Volleyball Team with an outstanding hitting average of 0.238, 199 kills, 193 digs, and 32 aces. Averi Greene, an outside hitter and setter, ended her final season with an impressive 214 digs, 217 kills, and 60 aces. This is Greene’s fourth year on varsity and first year as a setter. So far, she led her team to victory with her consistent plays, supportive attitude, and relentless communication.
