ACT at Rossview

11/2/2017

By Rebecca Waddle

Students at Rossview have already noticed an increased focus on preparation for the ACT. The ACT, or the SAT, is required to graduate in all public Tennessee schools, starting with the graduating class of 2018. The ACT is very crucial for every student because it will greatly impact their future. The ACT influences a student's way of life because it determines their college and career readiness. However, universities are not the only organizations that look at your ACT scores- employers and scholarship foundations do as well.

The ACT enrichment plans at Rossview are scheduled to continue, starting with “Know Your Numbers” and Study Island ACT practice on Wednesday. Furthermore, there are plans to incorporate additional activities during enrichment on Monday and provide more ACT support for juniors.

The goal for Rossview’s ACT score is to improve the overall average from a 22 to a 25. Dr. Doughty wishes to keep improving our score and striving for higher results, even though the school's score is currently very high.

The ACT allows Rossview High School to compare our results nationally; whereas, TN-Ready tests only compare our scores with other Tennessee schools. Furthermore, Rossview has been using the ACT to show the continuous improvement that takes place each year.

Why should Rossview student’s take advantage of this opportunity to prepare and take the ACT while in school?  In a recent interview with Dr. Doughty, she provided this insight: “... take it seriously. My husband wanted to be in the military right after high school and he [never took] the ACT. However, a few years later he decided that it wasn’t his passion anymore and wanted to go to college and pick a new career path. So, he had to take the ACT and we had to go back and relearn …  simple English questions, such as where semicolons go, and Geometry. I suggest to [students] to take it seriously because it is harder to go back down the line and try to earn a good enough ACT score to get into a decent college.”

Like Dr. Doughty suggested, all students, even those who are not college bound, should take the ACT, and take it seriously, because you never know where life is going to lead you. Many people do not plan on changing their career paths so early in their life. Yet, career changes happen frequently, and you do not want to go back and relearn high school courses in your late 20s or 30s.

Rossview will be continuing to implement new ACT practice opportunities at least once a week, including the information sessions: “Know Your Numbers” and Wednesday ACT practice during enrichment. Additional chances for increasing your score includes: study groups, future Saturday classes, and tutoring after school.

Dr. Doughty’s advice to the students here at Rossview: “What we do works. We have data that shows how our scores have improved because of ACT Wednesday and the study groups. Classes like ACT Prep have also helped to improve our students scores because those who have taken that class seem to score higher than those who have not. The data shows what we do works and it has improved hundreds of students scores since we started these activities.”

Lady Hawks Volleyball: Fall 2017 Season

11/2/2017

By Sarah Lange

The Lady Hawks Volleyball Team wrapped up their season in October over fall break, competing against Dyer County High School in the regional tournament. The team dominated this season with an impressive record of 18-3, defeating all other schools in the district with the exception of Clarksville High School. Going into the District Tournament, the Lady Hawks seated second. They hosted Kenwood High School in the first round of the tournament, where they swept the Lady Knights with an overall game score of 3-0. The second night of the District Tournament had equally exciting results; the Lady Hawks pulled out another win against the Northeast Eagles with a final score of 3-1.

The girls then advanced to the district finals and battled against the Clarksville Wildcats. The hard-fought game resulted in a triumphant win for Rossview, with an impressive final score of 3-0. Rossview advanced to the Regional Tournament and hosted Dyer County, where they lost in a devastating final game with a score of 3-2.

Head coach Krystal Weber emphasized proper fundamentals and built on the skills that players developed over the summer and past seasons. This is Coach Weber’s fourth year as head coach and her first year winning the district tournament. Assistant coaches Michelle Favreau and Mary Britten were new to the volleyball program at Rossview this year; they worked closely with the freshmen and the junior varsity teams to develop the younger players. Coach Britton is a new faculty member at Rossview High School this year, and she demonstrated tremendous skill in both her positive attitude towards players and knowledge of the game. Britten says, “I was ecstatic to become a part of the volleyball family and help lead the freshman team to a 8-1 season...It’s awesome to see all three teams come together in practice, learn from each other, lead and support each other, and cheer each other on during games.”

The team was led this year by seniors Meg Wilson, Kathryn Schmittou, and Averi Greene. Meg Wilson, a 6’0” middle blocker, worked hard and made extraordinary progress this season, ending her high school volleyball career with 72 kills and 31 total blocks. Kathryn Schmittou, a defensive specialist who finished the season with 89 total digs and over 140 serve receive passes, led the team with her upbeat attitude and continuous support. Her leadership skills secured her the position of team captain. She, along with fellow varsity captain Chloe Campbell, made crucial decisions on and off the court, drawing the team closer together than ever before. Chloe Campbell, a sophomore outside hitter and setter, inspired her team and drove them to sweeping victories with her unstoppable hustle and irrepressible motivation. She finished her first year on the Rossview Volleyball Team with an outstanding hitting average of 0.238, 199 kills, 193 digs, and 32 aces. Averi Greene, an outside hitter and setter, ended her final season with an impressive 214 digs, 217 kills, and 60 aces. This is Greene’s fourth year on varsity and first year as a setter. So far, she led her team to victory with her consistent plays, supportive attitude, and relentless communication.

Lady Hawks Soccer: Fall 2017 Season

11/2/2017

By Sarah Lange

The Lady Hawks Soccer Team finished their season in October with a record of 7-9-2. The tryout process started in late July, and the season officially began immediately after school started.

The girls started strong with a series of wins against Cookeville, Beech, Northwest, and Gallatin; however, the team experienced a few setbacks in the middle and end of the season. The Lady Hawks fought hard until the end, but ultimately lost to Henry County in the district semi-finals.
Head coach Danny Chartrand said the season “fell short of everyone’s expectations.” Injury played a crucial role in the Lady Hawk’s performance- as many as five varsity starters were hurt at one time.

The varsity team was also made up of relatively young players, including a few freshmen and sophomore players. The team focused on fundamentals and team unity, led by seniors Camille Leath, Rachel Taylor, Sarah Perez, Melanie Stevens, Layne Benson, Alyssa Merritt, Sophia Diago, and Briana Morris. Rachel Taylor was the lead scorer for the team, shooting her way to an ultimate 21 total goals. Taylor led the offensive players, along with Sarah Perez, who had an impressive 10 assists. Jade Irwin, a sophomore, demonstrated immense determination and leadership this year. She stepped in as the varsity goalkeeper, despite it being her first year playing soccer for Rossview. Her unstoppable focus and confidence supported the defensive wall; she finished the season with a phenomenal 43 saves in goal.

The Lady Hawks overall season was full of positive attitudes, strong teamwork, and hard work. Rossview is extremely proud of the effort that these girls and coaches put into the season, and cannot wait to see what they accomplish next year.

By Greyson Colp

“How many Magic: The Gathering players does it take to screw in a lightbulb? Three. One to do it, and two to stand and watch- telling him after the fact how he could have done it three turns faster.”

Did you know we have a Card Game Club? Well, we actually do! The sponsor of Card Club is Ms.Stanley. She teaches Honors Biology, Biology and Freshman Focus. The club is designed for kids that enjoy playing card games. If you like card games like Magic: The Gathering, Yugioh, Speed, and others, then this club is for you. (This is a serial story)

In a world that knows only green, red is an alien all unto itself. Green can only hide so much of the red that lies beneath the surface, and with it comes revolution.
